Ingredients

For the steak taco filling

  • 1 small skirt steak
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Vegetable oil

For the taco cheese shell

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

For the smash burger patty

  • 1 beef patty (about 150 g / 5.3 oz)
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

For the burger assembly

  • 1 burger bun, split
  • 1 tbsp burger sauce
  • 1 fried egg
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for the cheese skirt)

Method

For the steak taco filling

  1. Heat a non-stick pan over high heat, season the skirt steak with salt, pepper, and a touch of oil, then sear to desired doneness, 2–3 minutes per side.

  2. Remove the steak from the pan and let it rest for 2 minutes.

  3. Dice the cooked steak into small, bite-sized pieces.

For the taco cheese shell

  1. Add the 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese directly to the hot dry pan, letting it melt and spread into a flat circle.

  2. Cook until the bottom turns golden and crisp, about 2 minutes.

  3. Lift the melted cheese circle out of the pan, drape it over a taco rack, and allow it to cool into a hard taco shell shape, about 1 minute.

  4. Fill the crispy cheese shell with the diced steak.

For the smash burger patty

  1. Place the beef patty in the hot dry pan, pressing down firmly with a spatula to sear, 2–3 minutes per side, then set aside.

For the burger assembly

  1. Fry the egg in the dry pan to desired doneness, about 2 minutes, and set aside.

  2. Scatter 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese across the pan, cooking until melted and bubbly, about 2 minutes.

  3. Turn the crispy cheese layer out flat onto a board.

  4. Spread burger sauce on the bottom bun and place it on the center of the crispy cheese layer.

  5. Place the beef patty and fried egg on top of the bottom bun.

  6. Crown with the top bun and serve immediately alongside the crispy cheese taco.
