Homemade Garlic Naan

Ingredients

For the yeast mixture

  • 1 cup water, warm
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast

For the dough

  • 2 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp garlic butter

For the naan

    For the garlic butter coating

    • 3 tbsp butter, melted
    • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
    • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

    Method

    For the yeast mixture

    1. In a bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast, and whisk together.

    2. Let the mixture sit to activate and foam, for 5 minutes.

    For the dough

    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, salt, Greek yogurt, and the activated yeast mixture.

    2. Stir the ingredients together, then mix in 1 tbsp of garlic butter.

    3. Knead the dough gently until it comes together into a smooth ball.

    4. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 2 hours.

    5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured cutting board and divide it into 6 equal portions.

    6. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.

    7. Cover the dough balls with plastic wrap and let them rest for 30 minutes.

    For the naan

    1. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat.

    2. On a floured surface, stretch or roll each dough ball into a thin, elongated oval flatbread.

    3. Place a flatbread into the dry, hot cast-iron skillet and cook until bubbles form and the bottom is lightly charred, 1–2 minutes.

    4. Flip the naan and cook the other side until browned and blistered, 1–2 minutes.

    5. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.

    6. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, and chopped parsley to make the garlic butter coating.

    7. Brush each warm naan generously with the garlic butter coating before serving.
