Macau-Style Fried Pork Chop Sandwich

Ingredients

For the pork chop

  • 1 boneless pork chop
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For assembling

  • 2 slices white sandwich bread, toasted
  • 1 tbsp sambal oelek
  • Fresh cilantro leaves

Method

For the pork chop

  1. Pat the pork chop dry on both sides with a paper towel.

  2. Season both sides of the pork chop lightly with salt.

  3. Sprinkle flour lightly over both sides of the pork chop.

  4. Pour the beaten egg over the pork chop and flip until evenly coated.

  5. Place the pork chop on a plate of panko breadcrumbs, sprinkle more breadcrumbs over top, and press firmly into both sides.

  6. Transfer the breaded pork chop to the refrigerator to chill.

  7. Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).

  8. Fry the pork chop until deep golden brown and crispy, about 3 minutes per side.

  9. Remove the pork chop from the oil and drain briefly on paper towels.

For assembling

  1. Place the fried pork chop onto one slice of toasted white bread.

  2. Spoon the sambal oelek over the top of the fried pork chop.

  3. Top with fresh cilantro leaves.

  4. Cover with the second slice of toasted white bread and slice in half to serve.
