Classic Irish Apple Tart

Ingredients

For the pie crust

  • 1 batch no-fuss pie crust (such as Gemma's Best Homemade Pie Crust)

For the filling

  • 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cubed
  • 2 tbsp sugar

For assembly

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Method

For the pie crust

  1. Prepare the pie crust according to the recipe instructions and chill until firm.

For the filling

  1. In a bowl, toss the cubed apples with the sugar until evenly coated.

For assembly

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Roll out half of the pie crust and line the bottom of a 6-inch pie pan.

  3. Pile the apple mixture high into the prepared pie crust.

  4. Brush the edge of the bottom crust with egg wash.

  5. Roll out the remaining pie crust and lay it over the apples.

  6. Press the edges together to seal, trim any excess dough, and crimp the edges.

  7. Brush the top crust generously with egg wash.

  8. Cut a few small slits in the top crust to let steam escape.

  9. Sprinkle the top with sugar.

  10. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, 40–45 minutes.
